Providing your child with a solid foundation so they can thrive, and providing vocational supports to adult dyslexic learners
A Melbourne based Orton-Gillingham Academy accredited Literacy Specialist and Rehabilitation Counsellor, delivering evidence-based intervention and support to children and adults with dyslexia
With the right instruction, dyslexic children can learn to read and spell.
Anchored Literacy supports children and their families diagnosed or displaying a dyslexic learner profile who require specialist instruction, not typically obtained in the classroom. Every child is different and learns best when we understand their strengths and challenges as an individual.
Our instruction is alignment with the Orton Gillingham approach, which is long held as the ‘gold’ standard’ teaching method, successfully used around the world. This approach applies a multi-sensory (MSL), systematic and sequential method that is tailored to the individual. Instruction is diagnostic, prescriptive, direct, explicit, cognitive and emotionally sound.
Hi, I’m Nerine Kerfers
I am a qualified Literacy Specialist and Rehabilitation Counsellor with a passion for supporting people of all ages to identify their unique strengths and to address challenges resulting from learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or developmental delays in language, reading and writing. I am a US Board of Education certified classroom teacher with hands on experience applying the science of reading at a whole class level. I am an Associate Level Orton-Gillingham accredited practitioner, working with students on a one-on-one basis, both online or in person. The Orton-Gillingham approach is widely recognised as the gold standard in dyslexia remediation and evidence shows it works when delivered in a structured lesson format, with a student focused approach.
I am also a Rehabilitation Counsellor, and member of the Australian Counselling Association, which assists me in supporting both children and adults. I can assist by providing guidance to best support your child’s learning journey or my services equally support adults struggling with dyslexia in the workplace. My approach is client-centred, trauma informed and targeted to your specific needs.
My training and philosophy are to use a multi-sensory, explicit, cumulative and sequential approach to teaching. I only use methods that are phonics based and scientifically proven to create successful pathways for struggling readers and spellers. The Orton-Gillingham approach to learning to read and spell is an evidenced based, proven method of delivering explicit instruction that targets each child’s unique challenges. It allows your child to work at a pace that suits them, systematically building skills, one concept at a time, and targeting areas of phonological awareness that are unique to your child. I also support children with handwriting, written expression, inferencing, and planning and execution of structured essays.
I am a mother of 2 adult children, one of whom struggled all through school with ADHD. As a parent, I can relate to the crucial role we play supporting our children and how at times we can feel overwhelmed, having to advocate for our child and juggle the needs of a busy family life. My role is to not only teach your child but to provide support and understanding to parents and teachers, whom all share the same goals.
I have a current and valid Working With Children Victoria Check.
How we support your child
Screening and Assessments
We provide screening assessments using a range of standardised tests, which help us to identify a student’s learning needs and helps us to create the individual learning plans we apply during tutoring sessions.
We cannot make a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia or other Specific Learning Differences. We can however recommend an Educational Psychologist if required.
Individual Tutoring Services
We provide tailored one-on-one weekly tutoring sessions via zoom or face to face. These typically run for 10 weeks, during school term time. Once a student has completed a screening assessment, we develop personalised lesson plans and recommend the number of sessions per week. This could range from 1-3 45 minute sessions
Holiday Intensives
We offer school holiday intensive programs, which can deliver the same number of sessions a student would receive during the term. It is a wonderful opportunity for many students to make more rapid progress.
Parent Support and Advocacy
We understand how challenging it can be to advocate for your child alone. We are available to attend school meetings, provide progress reports or just lend an empathetic ear.
Kind words
‘Everything we do for a dyslexic learner benefits all learners. A phonics, multi-sensory approach hurts no-one, helps everyone and is transformative for dyslexics’.

More than phonics
Children do not learn to read via osmosis. They need to be taught explicitly. Understanding the science of reading is vitally important and so often misunderstood. This is not a debate we should be having. Science is science, even in reading.

DID YOU KNOW?
Dyslexia is a learning difference that includes difficulty in the use and processing of linguistic and symbolic codes, alphabetic letters representing speech sounds or numeric representing numbers or quantities.
